Almost Perfect is an original novel released in October 2008. Written by James Goss it takes place sometime between the season 2 finale Exit Wounds & Children of Earth.
Almost Perfect is a reference to one of its character Emma, a single woman looking for the perfect man. In her quest for such a person she finds an alien device that helps her with this task but it is not as benevolent as it seems.
Meanwhile Ianto has become a woman and the mystery is to find out how this happened.
Unsurprisingly these two situations are interconnected with each other.
The alien device does not have a voice of its own. It instead picked whatever voice that is available to it and the first voice that it uses to talk to Emma is that of Cheryl Cole from Girls Aloud and I can only wonder whether Cheryl Cole would have lend her voice to this story had it been a TV episode.
The alien device at one point uses the voice of the Tenth Doctor to talk to Jack. This probably would not have happened in a TV Almost Perfect as the Doctor isn’t allow to appear in the Torchwood series. Notwithstanding his hand in season 1, it is thought that having the Doctor appear in the Torchwood series would mean that children would watch him in it and Torchwood was not meant for children’s viewing.
Another thing to wonder if this had been a TV episode is who would have played Ianto as a woman as I really do not envision seeing Gareth David-Lloyd in drag.
The revelation of how this all came about this is interesting as it involved an event from Jack’s past even though it has quite a disturbing scene to it.
Along with Emma being kind of a villain, James Goss has written quite an engrossing tale with Almost Perfect. The title of the book certainly reflects the quality of it.
